365 things to do in Wagga #27 – Give the gift of life
Blood donation is one of the simplest ways of giving something back to the community, yet less of 3 per cent of Australians give blood each year. With recent stats estimating that 80% of the population will require blood products at some stage during their life, there is a high chance you will be one of those people.
While not unique to Wagga Wagga itself, giving blood will certainly assist in maintaining an adequate supply of blood in the community (we love Wagga). If you haven’t donated blood before, or it has been a while since your last donation, why not make a booking today?
Most people are eligible to give blood if they:
- are fit, healthy and not suffering from a cold, flu or other illness at the time of the donation or in the previous seven days
- are aged between 16 – 70 years
- weigh more than 45kg (16 – 17 year olds must weigh more than 50kg)
- are prepared by having plenty of fluids the day before donation, especially during warm weather, and in addition drink at least three good-sized glasses of water/juice within the three hours prior to donation
- eat something three hours prior to donation
The Wagga Wagga Donor Centre is located on 67 Berry Street and is open Monday – Friday, with Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday open until 7.30pm. Appointments are recommended and can be made by calling 13 14 95.
