365 things to do in Wagga #28 – Fishing for a cause

It’s that time of year again for the annual Wagga Classic Charity Fishing Competition, so dust off your rods and prepare yourself for Wagga’s famous competition for a cause (we love wagga).

You’ll have a chance to hook yourself a share of $25,000 worth of prizes up for grabs, while knowing you’re helping support sustainability within the region and contributing to a number of charities and organisations.

From its humble beginnings in 2009, the ‘catch and release’ competition has grown each year, providing locals and fellow anglers the perfect opportunity to test their fishing skills while enjoying the beauty of the Murrumbidgee River. And with over 30km of competition waters to fish in, it’s easy to see why its popularity continues to swell.

Families are encouraged to enter, with all children under the age of 16 automatically entered in the draw to win $250 worth of Gangster Lures.

There are prizes for almost everything including the longest cod, the longest yellowbelly, the longest redfin, the longest carp, the biggest bag of carp, the early bird, the lucky dip, the lure wall and of course there are prizes to be won simply by entering.

Major prizes include a Stacer 4.29 Rampage with a 40hp Mercury (or in other words a boat), valued at $13,000, a Stacer Jon Punt valued at $1,250 and a Minn-Kota electric bow mount valued at $1,600.

For those that want to make the most of the weekend, camping is available at Wiradjuri Reserve. Plus there will be a barbeque on Saturday night for all entrants and spectators to meet and greet.

Registration can be made prior to the event at Wagga Marine (110 Hammond Avenue) or Tackle World (3871 Sturt Highway). Alternatively entry can be organised on the day at the marshals hut.

Money raised during the event will go towards the Australian Men Shed’s Association, Wagga Historic Engine Club inc, Kidz Kottage Foundation and the Trevor Cannon memorial fingling release.

In memory of Trevor Cannon, the memorial fingling release was introduced to help support the Murrumbidgee River by releasing thousands of murray cod and yellowbelly finglings as part of the two-day event. During the process all are welcomed to take part and children are encouraged to bring a bucket.
